Bagpipe Teachers

Scott Methven is an accomplished piper with a reputation around the world.

After picking up the chanter for the first time at age 10, he quickly developed a passion for the instrument.  At age 12 he joined his local pipe band 'Stirling Pipe Band' where he developed his skills and quickly mastered his technique, going on to win several prizes.  Since then, Scott has competed with several notable pipe bands at the very top level including Shotts and Dykehead as well as Clan Gregor where he held the role of Pipe Sergeant.

Scott joined the Army as a piper at a young age and earned the rank of Sergeant Major (WO1).  His penultimate role with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders saw him leading the Regimental pipe band as Pipe Major. Scott's next job within the Army was to be the Pipe Major at the prestigious Army School of Army Piping and Highland Drumming. As Pipe Major he was responsible for the training of all pipers and drummers to intermediate standard in not only the British Army but the Commonwealth. Due to his success in the army, Scott was selected to be the official Sovereigns Piper, performing daily duties as The Royal Household Sergeant Major and thus a Military seconded employee of The Late Her Majesty the Queen.

Throughout his illustrious career, Scott has performed at many major events.  As well as Royal engagements and state visits, Scott has been seen performing alongside many celebrities such as Sting, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder and Billy Joel.

Scott has now retired from the army and spends most of his time with his two children. He also enjoys teaching at schools and online, as well as performing at various events.

About 8 years ago I retired to a remote province in Thailand, no pipers and no demand for piping. I played less and less and when I did play I played poorly, I had lost my way on my piping  journey. Last August I decided to do something about it and contacted Scott Methven the former Sovereign's piper, he accepted me as an online pupil and the zoom lessons have been an absolute revelation. Scott has a firm but fair approach to teaching, with his emphasis on accurate and clear fingering delivered in his relaxed friendly manner with a touch of humour and loads of encouragement in turn relit my passion for piping.

This modern approach to teaching opens up the proper learning and playing bagpipes to everyone, I would like to recommend Scott as a first class tutor.

After some 10 years away from competitive piping, I was seeking a tutor to help me get up to speed again and I was fortunate enough to find Scott. Initially, I was impressed with Scott's Resume, which is outstanding and authentic. He is an accomplished musician, and proficient in his teaching technique and musicality. He is non judgemental and supportive, which facilitates the open communication required to learn and develop. I live in Australia, and the lessons are conducted via zoom and this has not impacted the quality of tuition. With Scott's assistance and encouragement , I have returned to piping feeling confident and passionate. I thought it was a gamble looking for a quality tutor online given the plethora of "experts" advertising their services, however you can be reassured that Scott is the real deal.
